Updates on Surf7.net and latest trend in the industry.

If you require more processing power, look for hostican vps hosting plan. These will give you decent server resources at very affordable price.

According to the company, the extension is necessary to continue realising the LeaseWeb philosophy: always have twice as much capacity available as the bandwidth used by clients with their internet sites.

Get Up To Speed with Interleave

Mar 06, 2008 2:01 PM PST
I recently wrote an article covering the installation of a
very powerful Enterprise-ready process automation system called Interleave.
This tool is exceptional for tracking and accountability. It's features go
beyond the scope of many small company needs (but shouldn't keep smaller
ventures from deploying it) so it can cover just about any company.
Getting the system up and running was no cake walk but
it's do-able for just about anyone. Using the system can, at first, seem very
daunting (due to the incredible amount of features), but it needn't be so. It's
just a matter of making Interleave fit your needs.

With that in mind, let's get to work.

If you know anything about hosting or have been looking for a host I am sure
that you have some how or some way landed on the hostgator website. hostgator
has been around since 2002 and they have made their web presence very strong,
for example type in any hosting related keyword and I am sure that you will find
them in a google ad or in the top of the search engines. hostgator offers a lot
of variety to their customers so there is a lot to choose from. hostgator offers
three basic plans for the average consumer and website owner; they also offer a
wide range of reseller packages and dedicated servers for the larger customers.

hostgator offers a fairly basic plan for 4.95$ (When paid 3 years in advance) or
8.95$ if paid month to month, this plan offers 350GB of disk space and 3000GB of
bandwidth but incredibly that only let you host one domain so this package is
virtually worthless. The next plan up which they call the baby offers 600GB of
disk space and 6000GB of monthly bandwidth and costs 9.95$ per month if you pay
month to month. If you pay for 1 year in advance you can get this package at
119.40$. This plan of hostgator is one of the most famous plans in the web
hosting industry. This plan offers unlimited domains to be hosted on your
account and also offers some upgraded features from the very basic plan
including unlimited pop3 email accounts, unlimited ftp accounts, unlimited sub
domains, and unlimited parked domains, it also offer ninety nine point nine
percent server uptime compared to the guaranteed ninety nine point five percent
guaranteed uptime offered with the most basic plan. The next thing that they
offer is the swamp plan which gives you the user 1000GB of disk space and
unlimited monthly bandwidth and offers chili soft asp which the other plans do
not offer, in addition the swamp plan also offers private ssl a feature that
most other hosting companies don't offer and costs 14.95$ per monthif paid
monthly or yearly.

hostgator also offers some dedicated servers for proxies and things of that
nature, they are quite expensive though compared to the competition and this is
a whole different market compared to the basic hosting. One nice feature of the
hostgator service is that they offer Cpanel which is quite a good control panel;
this is free compared to some other hosts which charge for the upgrade to a
Cpanel hosting plan. Also like most other hostgator offers a online chat support
and a toll free number that you can call in case you need assistance in setting
up youre hosting or trying to pick a plan out that fits your needs. Over all
hostgator would probably be a eight out of ten because they offer a lot of
features but only on their more expensive plans where as most other hosts will
offer the same features on there low end plans, another big turn off is that
they only allow you to host one domain on there cheapest plan, most hosts allow
unlimited or at least fifteen or twenty.

User Reviews

Asim says :

hostgator is an exceptional hosting provider, never got disappointed, using
dedicated server these days and it is awesome!

Aditya Singh says :

I loved hostgator and their support. It rocks all ways. They truly deserve to be
called the web hosting company on the internet.

Amit Nyamtabad says :

hostgator is one of the biggest hosting company & I am hosting couple of my
sites with these guys. They really do provide good customer support & quality
uptime. Till now my experience has been good with the them.

Rating : A++

GVK says :

Yes, my choice is Host Gator, am with Host Gator since once year. I don't say
they are cheap and best. They are Better than Best :)

Customer Support is awesome, till now i got my problems solved in less than 5-10
mins. Rated: 10

Navjot Singh says :

Excellent Hosting I must say. 100% Uptime. I loved the fact that it gives no
discounts for yearly payment, so it never forces us to buy yearly. So we can
test for a month and then switch to other if we don't like it. But never liking
it...nah such a situation will never arise. I am running a vb forum and never
saw loading touching 2+ even on a shared account. That's excellent considering
at my last host it touched 10-14% usually.

Highly recommended.

SixApart, WordPress and 37Signals Support OpenID; Why Not 1&1 and GoDaddy?

Wed, 07 Mar 2007 12:09:00 -0400

I've been reading a lot about OpenID, a free, decentralized framework for managing digital identities. You start with an URI (think of it as a master username) and store your password and other creditials with an OpenID provider. You can then log into any OpenID enabled service with your URI. The service will fetch whatever credentials it needs from your identity provider.

Simon Willison wrote a great post on cool things you can do with OpenID. My favorite is restricted single sign on. Simon suggested that if everyone in an organization had "username.internal.example.org" OpenIDs, all internal apps behind the firewall could be configured to grant automatic access to such users. This eliminates the hassle of creating/deleting accounts on each service for incoming/departing employees. Couldn't GoDaddy use a similar method to apply the same logins across its many services?

I'm also intrigued by Kai Hendry's comment that maybe OpenID can be used for brokering payments. This would allow access pass holders to view content, download songs, etc across multiple sites. Not that this technology isn't already available, but OpenID would save subscribers from having to keep track of different logins for different networks.

Anyway, Microsoft announced last month that it would make Windows Cardspace interoperable with OpenID. A couple of weeks later, AOL announced its support as well. SixApart is in (in fact, OpenID creator Brad Fitzpatrick also developed LiveJournal, and is SixApart's chief architect). And Digg. And ImageShack, WordPress, Technorati, SmugMug, 37Signals...

Recently I signed up for isabel.wang.name as my OpenID through FreeYourID (which I read about on TechCrunch). If nothing else, they managed to sell me a .name domain. My question is, why isn't 1&1 in this market as well?

Mailtrust, a division of Rackspace, provides more than 100,000 small, medium, and geographically dispersed companies with business-class email hosting. The company’s mission critical email systems are housed in Rackspace’s carrier-grade data centers to help ensure uptime. Founded in 1999, and acquired by Rackspace in 2007, Mailtrust is headquartered in Blacksburg, Virginia and was recently named the 217th fastest growing, privately held company in America by Inc. Wachovia Capital Partners partnered with experienced industry executives, Art Zeile and Joel Daly earlier this year with a goal of acquiring and building a leading managed hosting company. Art Zeile and Joel Daly were the founders of Inflow, an IT services company managing 14 datacenters, which was sold to SunGard Availability Services in 2005. Wachovia Capital Partners was the first and largest investor of Inflow.

With this acquisition, the executives will assume the roles of CEO and COO of the company.

Tomorrows Tax Day, Don't Pay, I'm Certain

Mon, 14 Apr 2008 11:50:00 -0400
“Certainty? In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes.” Except for not patenting electricity Benjamin Franklin is usually correct.

In regards to the life cycle of your web hosting company his timing is impeccable.

Your company should do everything possible not to pay taxes. You can either give it to the government, great benefit there, or grow your business and hence the economy. Hire more employees (let them pay taxes), spend money on capital equipment and that whole channel line pays taxes. But remember you don’t want your company to pay taxes. Not on April 15th.

Smart and profitable industrialists, hopefully like you, avoid taxes. That is one of the commanding reasons for acquiring a business. Most web host firms have lousy balance sheets. They have depreciated the assets and have nothing to shield profits, they pay taxes.

I always find it sort of magical that you can acquire an asset (buy a company) that was fully depreciated yesterday, put it on your balance sheet today (stepping up the assets as accounts say) and voila! you have a complete new depreciation schedule protecting your cash. Sort of like asparagus cropping up in the spring, where did that come from?

So you say…“I am profitable but don’t have any money to make an acquisition Tom”. Even a better reason to take out a government loan. That is exactly what not paying taxes is, a differed no interest loan from the government. And if you screw up sort of risk free.

Now Ben was correct…nothing is certain but death and taxes. In your case the death of your company. Don’t frown, this is just the end of the investment period…maybe the buyer of your company will keep the name, who cares?…your out. Now you want to pay a lot of taxes, big time taxes. You have taken those government loans and parlayed them into your success. As Franklin said taxes were certain, he just did not state when.

High availability Hosting - Generation Next

Thu, 26 Jul 2007 12:08:17 -0400
Shared and dedicated hosting prices have reached their rock bottom and profit margins are very narrow. The differentiator today is marketing skills, customer support and hardware reliability.

Customer support and marketing are both dependent on stability of the hardware. Hardware prices have hit the rock bottom and today we are looking at reducing the number of times a customer has to get back to the hosting company complaining about their sites being down due to hardware failure.

Enter high availability hosting. With the downward spiral prices of hardware and the higher quality, we are looking at clustering as the new age solution to reduce site downtimes specially of critical websites. The huge popularity of community portals like Orkut, YouTube, Flickr, etc. speak of the change from individual websites to uptime critical web portals.

Maximizing Your Mindshare (and Wallet Share) in the New World of SaaS

Thu, 01 Mar 2007 15:11:00 -0400

I really like SMBLive CEO Matt Howard's way of looking at software as a service. (Some argue that we should start calling it software enabled service.) Matt says running a business is all about maintaining "5 conversations": with oneself, co-workers, external partners (vendors/contractors/distributors), customers and the general public. So ideally, web apps should facilitate personal productivity,
collaboration, vendor management, CRM and sales/marketing.

Traditionally, hosting providers have focused on helping customers maintain a web presence - which only fulfills 20% of the functionalities Matt describes. So I thought it was pretty awesome when Barbara Branaman mentioned that Concentric is in the process of integrating its new collaboration service with its clustered hosting and email solutions. I said the unified offering should help Concentric increase mindshare. Barbara said also importantly, it will boost wallet share. The goal is to earn a larger slice of more customers' IT budgets.

Barbara will need to keep a close eye on Google, whose Apps Premier cover about half of the 5 conversations. Remember last December's headlines about Microsoft battling Gmail for corporate workers' attention? It seems Redmond faces an even tougher challenge with respect to productivity apps: Ars Technica reported yesterday that Google Docs and Spreadsheet account for a 92% share of unique visitors, and 95% of the amount of time spent. I'm not impressed with Google Pages, but Blogger is pretty popular. I'm sure sooner or later both will be rolled into Google Apps, along with Google Base.

Meanwhile, have you heard about eBay's new partnerships with ERP/CRM provider NetSuite (spotted via Mark Crofton's blog) and popular social network Bebo? And SalesForce is looking to build a "circle of success" around its CRM app; David Berlind says their odds are decent.

Earlier David Snead asked via a comment on an earlier post whether easy interoperability between different vendors' apps will obviate the need for hosting providers to customize services for any audience. Based on Rodney Loges' experience, I think the answer is no.

Rodney (who was instrumental in digitalNATION's $100 million sale to Verio as well as Rackspace's launch of its Intensive service) has transformed his company from a web development firm into a SaaS provider by assembling a suite of best-of-breed content management, web analytics, collaboration, etc, tools for associations and non-profits. Each hand-picked application meets specific requirements that his customers share. I think that's what it takes to win in SaaS/SES - of which hosting is just a small percent. In other words, the key is customer segmentation.

Overview

The site that you are looking at now has been hosted by LunarPages since the
first day for more than 5 years! Currently, I also have another two websites
hosted by LunarPages currently. I used to have eight accounts with them! Thanks
to the multiple domain hosting feature, I can now host more websites using less
accounts.

The discussion below is based on my experience with LunarPages as one of their
longest customer. You cannot get more insider information about LunarPages
elsewhere :-)

LunarPages is currently serving over 150,000 customers in over 200 countries. It
was founded in the summer of 2000 when a successful large scale hosting
provider, Add2Net Corporation, expanded its hosting offerings to include shared
hosting.

They are offering two Unix shared hosting plans - Basic Hosting ($7.95) and
Business Hosting ($22.95). The $22.95 plan is a larger plan with unlimited disk
space and 15,000 GB of bandwidth. They also offer other types of hosting
including Windows hosting, VPS hosting, dedicated and semi-dedicated servers but
in this review, I'm just going to write about the $7.95 Basic Hosting Plan,
which I believe is sufficient for 99% of you.

Plan Size and Features

1,500 GB of disk space and 15,000 GB of bandwidth are a lot. Click on the small
picture to view the original wallpaper of Saguaro National Park, Arizona. The
size of the large and high quality picture is 228 KB (kilobyte). With 1,500 GB
of disk space, you can store more than 6.5 million copies of this picture! And
with 15,000 GB/month bandwidth, this picture can be viewed more than 65,700,000
times a month (That's 65.7 million)! The most suitable words to describe 1,500
GB of disk space and 15,000 GB of bandwidth are "More Than Enough!". :-)

There are many web hosts that offer large disk space and bandwidth, but keep in
mind that these web hosts might have funny restrictions such as file size limit,
daily bandwidth limit, or even binary files bandwidth limit (pictures, MP3s,
Flash ...). LunarPages does not have such restrictions with your disk space and
bandwidth usage. You can upload a single 1,500 GB file if you want and you can
finish your 15,000 GB bandwidth in 1 day. As LunarPages founder and CEO, Ron
Riddle told me, "We actually allow people to use everything and we have no
problem offering them what we are currently offering."

Customer Support

It is not the large disk space or bandwidth that make me rank LunarPages as #1
high but its superior customer support! They spend a great deal of money hiring
a lot of support staff to take care of their customers. All of them are very
friendly and knowledgeable. With their effort on customer support, you can
expect the best attention from them.

1. Email support - Simply email support@Lunarpages.com and you will always get a
good reply, no matter if you are a current customer or you just need to ask some
presale questions. Good replies are replies with the exact answer you need. I
suggest that you send them an email right now to see how effective they are. All
email will automatically be tracked by the same ticket system used by the
support help desk. This is my favorite method to request support, because it is
fast, convenient and effective. Email support is available twenty-four hours a
day, seven days a week.

2. Support Help Desk - You will send your inquiry through the use of an online
form. All your inquires will be tracked and recorded using their ticket system.
They even keep a history of all your issues so you can refer back to them
anytime you want. There is also a knowledgebase of frequently asked questions in
the help desk so you can find your answers without creating a support ticket.

They used to be using a third party support help desk system known as DeskPro.
But because they are so rich customer oriented, they decided to dump DeskPro and
develope their own help desk system and call it LunarDesk!

3. Toll-Free Support - Just call 1-877-LunarPAGES if you need phone support for
USA and Canada. For the United Kingdom, call 0800-072-9150 instead. If you live
outside of these countries, you cannot dial the toll free number. They provide
another support line for their international customers: 1-714-521-8150. I have
called them several times and they have no problem talking to me with my slang.

4. Lunar Forums (LunarForums.com)- LunarPages provides forums to let their
customers communicate and help each other. You can find many answers for your
questions. You will also meet many happy customers there. Remember only hosts
that are confident with their services and have many customers dare to set up an
open forum. Currently, the forum has around 35,670 registered users. And
LunarForums is also one of the oldest webmaster forums out there.

I will surely rate their customer support as 10 over 10, or 11 over 10 if I can
:-) Their customer satisfaction speaks for itself. I always stress to my
visitors who write to me that if they are web hosting newbie who need a lot of
attentions and supports, they should always pick LunarPages. This will make sure
that they are fully taken care of in their "early age".

If you have read my reviews or other web hosts, you will notice that I will
state that if you have any unresolved issues with the host, you can always
forward them to me and I will take them directly to the officers. Even though I
have direct contact with many important officers of LunarPages (even the CEO), I
never mention it in my LunarPages review. I don't need to do so because all
LunarPages clients are able to resolve the issue directly with the dedicated
support staffs without going through a third party like me.

Sometime ago, I have submitted a possible SPAM issue to them. To my surprise,
not only that they reply to my email but they have also called me and left me a
voice message! You can click on the 'Play' button below to listen to the voice
message yourself. They did look into SPAM issues seriously to make sure the mail
server is not blocked. They are constantly making sure that all their customers
emails will be sent and received properly.
